Paulo and Rui Campos - Souselas (Portugal) reign supreme in South European pigeon racing

Those who visit Portugal and have an eye for pigeon racing, will never underestimate the level of sport in the beautiful country ... with hard conditions, only tough pigeons can be able to stand out in the crowd.

With one dominating partnership in particular; that of Rui & Paulo Campos. Super champions with 3 National titles, 7 provincial titles & acebird and several Olympiad participants over the last ten years, there fame has moved far beyond the borders!

Portugal, with a rich history of explorers, in some way needs to explored when it comes to pigeons ... two men who give a face to Portugese pigeon racing by excelling at the International Pigeon Olympiad, are father & son Rui & Paulo Campos ... dedicated fanciers with only ‘gold’ as biggest goal. After starting homing pigeons in 1983, Paulo was diagnosed allergy to feather dust in 1990 and first after his father Rui retired, they started racing again ... first in Grupo Columbófilo de Coimbra, since 1997 until now in the county of Aveiro, with more or less 3.500 fanciers ... in this millennium the dominance of the ‘Campos Selecção’ has been phenomenal! With passion Paulo tells about his early years in pigeon racing: “For starts, I had a super pigeon, 71347/84, nicknamed ‘Matulão’. He had no clear origins that when applied exclusively to breeding purposes and mated with different hens, generated pigeons that claimed excellent results; even though the majority of them are not physically pleasing to the touch. Like for instance the 3. Nat. acebird short distance 2000, which was born when the father was already 13 years old. The great leap in quality occurred however in 1995, when I bought a cock, Jan Grondelaers strain, PORT5268601/95 nicknamed ‘Grondelaers 601’ and the hen from Karel Hufkens strain PORT5268792/95 ‘Alexandra’. The put lifted our results to exceptional new highs.”

After also ‘Alexandra’s mother BE-6122663/94 ‘Hufkens 663’ (Granddaughter to ‘Gouden Stamvader’ and sister to ‘Stammoeder’) found a prominent place in the breeding lofts, a typical and particular strain of pigeons developed, excelling on short and middle distance Portuguese provincial battles. A family developed in about 15 years with the Grondelaers/Hufkens stock birds are solid base and as crossing material some pigeons with very good results ... Now more than 80% of the colony has the same Grondelaers/Hufkens origine, moderately inbred ... almost unbeatable in one day racing until 400 km with average speed ranges from 1.100 to 1.300 m/m.

Fresh blood was to this top base was given by direct purchases at Louis van Loon in 2002 and Félix Pauwels in 2003 ... as well as the cockbird NL1705987/03 from the Dutch fanciers Atema & Son, the cock BE6468678/04 aquired in 2005 in the auction of Porto’s Olympiads from Luc, Bart and Jurgen Geerinckx and one cock from good friends Rui & Paulo Rodrigues, the owners of ‘Supra’. The offspring to these golden producers are entered only in short and middle distance racing (until 400 km) ... cocks and hens in double widower system.

Definite International breakthrough for father and son Campos was competing in the Olympiad South Africa 2001 with PORT7410365/97 ‘Olimpica 365’ and the Olympiad Oostende 2007 with PORT3699587/03 ‘Olimpica 587’ … ‘Olimpica’ 365’ is a direct daughter of ‘Alexandra’, the amazing Hufkens breeding hen … ‘Olimpica’ 365’ is winner of
